• ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAMINATIONS (AP):

    The AP Program allows high school students to try college-level work, where the subject matter is explored in more depth. A qualifying score on an AP Test can earn the student college credit or advanced placement. Check with your counselor to see which AP courses are offered at Chavez High School.

    AMERICAN COLLEGE TEST (ACT):

    The ACT Assessment is a standardized college entrance examination that measures knowledge and skills in English, mathematics, reading, and science reasoning. Four year universities require either the ACT or SAT I as part of the admission criteria. Consult the catalog of the specific university applying to.     ARMED SERVICES VOCATIONAL APTITUDE BATTERY (ASVAB):

    The ASVAB is a career exploration program consisting of a multi-aptitude test battery that helps students explore their interests, abilities, and personal preferences. This test is open to juniors and seniors. It is required for military enrollment but all students are encouraged to take the ASVAB regardless of military interest.

    ASSESSMENTS IN CAREER EDUCATION (ACE):

    The ACE testing program is designed to recognize outstanding student achievement in the following five career-technical areas: Agriculture, Computer Science and Information Services, Food Service and Hospitality, Health Care, and Technology.

    COMMUNITY COLLEGE ASSESSMENT TEST:

    All students who plan to attend a community college must take an English and math assessment test prior to enrolling. Bakersfield College administers their assessment test at the Delano Center. Contact the specific college applying to for more information regarding assessment tests.

    HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAMINATION (HSEE):

    State law authorized the development of the High School Exit Examination that students in California public schools will have to pass to receive a high school diploma, beginning with the graduating class of 2004. The purpose of the HSEE is to improve student achievement in high school.

    PLAN EXAMINATION:

    The PLAN is an instrument designed for sophomores to help guide them in their post-secondary planning. The test measures the same academic skills as the ACT Assessment but at the tenth grade level. The PLAN includes an interest inventory, a study-skills assessment, an educational/occupational planning section, and a student-needs profile. The exam is given in the fall.

    PRELIMINARY SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE TEST (PSAT):

    The PSAT is a practice test for the SAT I. It is comprised of three content areas: verbal, math, and writing. Given to juniors in the fall, the PSAT is also used as a qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program, the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students, and the National Hispanic Scholar Recognition Program.

    The SAT I: Reasoning Test is a standardized college entrance examination which measures developed verbal and mathematical reasoning abilities.     SCHOLASTIC APTITUDE SUBJECT TESTS (SAT II):

    The SAT II Subject Tests measure a student’s knowledge of a specific subject and the ability to apply that knowledge. The University of California requires students to take three Subject Tests, one in English, one in mathematics, and one of their choice. Consult the catalog of the specific university applying to for admission requirements.

    STANDARDIZED TESTING AND REPORTING PROGRAM (STAR):

    The Standardized Testing and Reporting program (STAR) is comprised of three components: the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT-9), the STAR augmented tests for English/language arts and mathematics, and the Spanish Assessment of Basic Education (SABE/2). All students enrolled in California public schools are required to take the SAT-9 and various components of the STAR augmented tests. Spanish-speaking limited English proficient students who have been enrolled in California public schools for less than 12 months at the time of testing are also required to take the SABE/2.
